On November 22, 1997, something happened to the folding carton industry. This "something", an awakening of sorts, came in the form of a simple statement. "A high percentage of National Paperbox Association (NPA) member companies may not be equipped to deal with the complexities of the changes taking place in the business environment and may be at risk of survival unless significant changes are made in the way they do business." This statement, made by Larry Wright, former chairman of the NPA, current president of Warren Packaging in Davenport, Iowa, was a beacon of change for his association in more ways than one. Not only did he help to open the eyes of many NPA members, Wright's foresight sparked a movement within the association to prepare its members for what uncertainties and challenges lie ahead. Last year's annual spring meeting marked the beginning of a Millennium Process that promises to help members shape the futures of their businesses. In its infancy, as far as many members were concerned, the program seemed relatively out of reach and intangible. However, the tone seemed much more forgiving this year, and actually, quite optimistic. Having matured throughout 1998 and early 1999, the five-year strategic planning program has begun to take shape. With the help of a handbook, members can more readily see what incremental steps they need to take to gain more control of their businesses. The first segment of the Millennium workbook involves members getting to know their companies and industry more intimately. The second and third are designed to help members create a plan and clarify their visions for the future. Finally, the workbook includes a step-by-step guide for implementing the plant, complete with deadlines for goals. The NPA staff will be involved throughout the process to help evaluate progress. Ed Barlow, Jr., president of Creating the Future Inc., has joined forces with the NPA in its mission. And this is just the beginning. Each meeting hereafter, well into the next millennium, will provide support and new information to coincide with this plan. Other highlights of the meeting included a speech on consumer trends given by Brad Edmondson, president of Edmondson Consulting; a presentation on business trends by Bill Cook, president of Human Resource Associates; and a panel of the future, which included second generation future heirs of NPA companies. Look for regular updates on the NPA's Millennium Process in future issues of BCI. The NPA also announced the winners of its 49th Annual Packaging Competition. Nearly 400 entries were judged in three categories and 21 end-use classes. Best of Show awards were given to the top scorer of all rigid box entries and the top scorer of all folding carton entries. The "Ford VIP Box", a presentation box for Ford Motor Co.'s new automotive brochures, took top honors for DeRidder Inc. in Rochester, New York. Structural designer John Yasso included a magnetic closure, round edges and texture provided by a single E-flute laminate. The graphics were produced by an outside agent, J. Walter Thompson. All Packaging Co., Aurora, Colorado, topped this category with its "Arizona Diamondback's Baseball Stadium Carton". Created for Pioneer Packaging of Phoenix, Arizona, structural designer John Chaisson incorporated a snakeskin collector's baseball into a box constructed to look like a stadium. Graphic designer Chuck Arndt enhanced the 3-D image by using complex sight lines and multiple degrees of shading. Gold Awards
