TAPPI Highlights From the Chairman

First off, I would like to say how pleased I am to be the 2002 TAPPI Corrugated Containers Division chairman. I would also like to extend an invitation to the Boxboard Containers International readers who may not be TAPPI members to join. TAPPI is an excellent technical association offering a multitude of resources including the largest international group of technically experienced people in the industry, the most comprehensive collection of reliable technical information and knowledge in the industry, and the highest quality products and services created to meet the needs of people who solve technical problems in the industry.

As we look to the future, we know we have many challenges facing us. Our industry is changing and we, along with the Division and TAPPI, must change to deal with the new environment. By bringing together our many fine supplier and converter members to face these challenges head on, we can collectively develop some possible solutions to pave the way for a better future.

I am already getting suggestions on how to make this division the best it can be. One of our members, Bob Sukenik, proposed a possible solution to help us through the turbulent times our industry is experiencing. He suggested we gather a cross-section of our division members and meet with a consultant to give input, and ultimately come up with a structure that will better meet the needs of our constituents. Starting with a clean sheet of paper, the intent is to define who we are, where we are going and how we are going to get there - no easy task. Once this research is completed, final recommendations will be presented to the Division Council and then to the Division Steering Committee for approval, and will finally be presented to senior TAPPI officials. I applaud Bob's efforts.

For the future, I envision a structure that is responsive to the needs of its members and one that can grow and change with the times. I see us pulling closer together as an association for having gone through this metamorphosis. The Division may look a little different next spring in Minneapolis and we may look a lot different next fall in Indianapolis, but however we look, my intent is to do the best job I can to give our membership what they would like to have in a technical association.
